South Bay Auctions is pleased to announce the launch of their auction catalog for The Collection of Laura Fisher (1945-2021), world-renowned quilt expert, dealer, and author. This sale of more than 400 selected lots from her estate is happening May 21st, 2022 at South Bay Auctions in East Moriches, Long Island, New York.

The catalog contains premium antique quilts, hooked rugs, Americana, and Folk Art from the late dealer's Fisher Heritage inventory, as well as some items from Fisher’s personal collection, including jewelry, being offered for the first time.

Of note is the “Flags of the Nations of the World” commemorative U.S. Centennial Exhibition quilt with provenance to J. Watson Webb of Shelburne Museum.

Among other highlights is a unique, late 19th century pieced quilt with a verse from the Book of John describing the Passover feast, and a rare late 19th century Hawaiian Monarchy Flags quilt, created in the sovereign Hawaiian Kingdom before it was colonized by the United States.

Also offered is a rare African American "World Geography" pictorial quilt made by the Lomax sisters of Kentucky in the 1940s or 1950s. This exquisite quilt has been exhibited many times and published in several books and it has an interesting backstory. As noted by Fisher in her catalog, "According to family lore, [the Lomax sisters] were school teachers who created the pictorial blocks based on pictures they savored in National Geographic Magazine. They never travelled overseas nor far from their Kentucky home, but were so affected by what they learned that they chose to depict some of the wonders of the world in this unique work."

The catalog can be viewed on Live Auctioneers, Invaluable, and on South Bay Auctions' website.
