The Only Way Out is Through, 2021, 84” x 60” Oil on Linen
Todd Williamson Studio

For its fall season opening Georges Berges Gallery presents LA-based Abstract Todd Williamson in the The Only Way Out is Through, featuring a new series of sweeping emotionally-charges abstracts.

The title of the show is borrowed and inspired by Robert Frost’s prescient poem “Servant to Servant,” which presents with each work what Williamson describes as “deeply layered reflections” of the past ways we lived that “no longer have a place in this world. Asking, ”Who are we now? How do we see our future? What has fundamentally changed?” Williamson poetically captures the complicated and almost surreal space we have lived this past year and a half, not only as individuals but also as a collective society.

Over the course of his career, Williamson counts 125 exhibitions worldwide.  His artistic journey has been impacted by events such as: serving as guest participant of Louise Bourgeois’ Saturday Artists Salons at her Chelsea gallery; an artist invitational to the American Academy in Rome; a visit to the Beijing newly-opened arts district; a chance meeting two Italian curators -Cynthia and Renato Penna and exhibiting solo in PROCESSIONAL, one of the official collateral events of the 2019 Venice Biennale - named one of the Top Ten Exhibitions for 2019.  His work is most notably in the permanent collection of the Pio Monte della Misericordia where the piece hung next to Caravaggio’s “Seven Works of Mercy” for a period of time.

Live Music by New York City-based musicians at the Opening EventTo capture the unease and angst of the show, Williamson is again collaborating with UNCSA Professor Greg Walter who composed a musical rendition called "renewal" based on old folk revival songs. He has placed the pieces two 5ths apart creating a beautiful haunting arrangement.  The music will be performed live on opening night by UNCSA Professor Greg Walter / voice-Allen Hamrick on bassoon -Delphine Skene on violin and Adi Muralidharan on cello
