MARTINO ABELLANA (Filipino, 1914-1988), "Boulders", 1973, oil on canvas. 25” x 31-1/2”
SOPHIE B. BIGELOW (American, Brooklyn, 19th century), portrait of a child (possibly Otto T. Bannard), 1856, oil on canvas, signed "Mrs. J.W. Bigelow" and dated lower left. In giltwood oval frame. 24-1/4" x 20".

South Bay Auctions is pleased to announce our next Fine Art, Antiques and Sporting auction, on Saturday, July 9th, 2022. The sale features lots from New York estates and collections, including paintings, drawings, prints, antique American, English and Continental furniture and decorations, estate jewelry, silver, quilts (from the Estate of Laura Fisher), collectibles, scientific instruments, and more. Also included are eighteen artworks being sold to benefit Ukraine.

Leading the sale is a rare-to-market beach scene with figures by Filipino artist, Martino Abellana (1914-1988), entitled "Boulders", painted in oil on canvas in 1973. Other highlights include a pencil study (and photograph of completed work) by American sculptor, Don Gummer (born 1946), and several lots of Danish Modern furniture including an Arne Vodder teak credenza. Also of note is a scarce 1856 oil portrait by Sophie B. Bigelow (American, Brooklyn, 19th century). Few works by this 19th century woman artist are known, but the portrait likely depicts Otto T. Bannard as a child, since his age and likeness match Bigelow’s depiction of him in a group portrait of the Bannard children painted the same year. A photograph of the group portrait of the Bannard children is held in The Frick Collection’s Photoarchive.

ANNA JURINICH, "Asleep in the Garden", 2002, acrylic on paper. 29-1/4” x 21-3/4” *This lot being sold to benefit Ukraine.

UKRAINE BENEFIT AUCTION ITEMS

Lots 115-132 in the July 9th sale at South Bay Auctions are being sold to benefit the humanitarian war relief effort in Ukraine. 50% of the hammer price from those lots will be donated to Razom, a nonprofit, Ukrainian-American human-rights organization. The benefit was organized by the Full Moon Arts Center Collective in collaboration with South Bay Auctions, and includes works by local East End Long Island artists including, Paul Davis, Anna Jurinich, Gina Gilmour and Peter Beston, and many others.

The Full Moon Arts Collective came into existence in 2005 under the inspiration and leadership of conceptual artist Ronnie Wiener, with the express intent of creating a space and environment to allow artists of varying disciplines to create visionary work. Whether art, music, dance, performing arts or poetry, the vision then and now is to allow the spirit of free and unencumbered ideas to flourish, and then to present the result of that effort to the community at large.

In 2018, Ronnie—along with artist Anna Jurinich—welcomed a new group of local East End Long Island artists to pursue their individual visions in the same collaborative environment. Each of the artists in the Full Moon Arts Center Collective has a long and distinguished career in various disciplines, from painting to photography, mixed media, collage, conceptual art, sculpture, and poetry.
