From Luminism to Pop: Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers’ Major April 28, 2011 Sale Presents Landmark Works Across Two Centuries

Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers is pleased to announce its major spring sale, to be held on April 28th, 2011 at 6pm. The sale offers an array of landmark paintings, including works by Louis Rémy Mignot, Sanford Gifford, Walter Launt Palmer, William Harnett, and more. The sale also features an important collection of Pop Art, including works by Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Gerald Laing, John Wesley, Marisol Escobar, Allan D’Arcangelo and many others.

Leading an impressive group of Hudson River School works is Louis Rémy Mignot’s Travelers in a Tropical Landscape, a rediscovered masterpiece based on his 1857 trip across Ecuador with Frederic Church. In addition to Mignot’s Travelers, the sale includes two Luminist gems by Sanford R. Gifford, Bend in the Juniata River and Lake Champlain. Other important 19th century paintings include a Brooklyn yachting scene by James Edward Buttersworth and a Long Island work by Edward Lamson Henry.

Still life is also well-represented. A rare floral by William Mason Brown is accompanied by a trompe l’oeil painting by William Harnett and John F. Peto’s Self-Portrait with Rack Painting, one of the artist’s most-exhibited works. Additional artists include Emil Carlsen, Levi Wells Prentice, Otis Kaye, and Robert Spear Dunning.

Childe Hassam, Paul Cornoyer, and Walter Launt Palmer lead an impressive group of American Impressionist artists. Other highlights include figurative works by William McGregor Paxton, Irving Ramsey Wiles, Mary Bradish Titcomb, Charles Hopkinson, and Abbott Fuller Graves.

Additional important works by George Boice Durrie, Charles Courtney Curran, Janet Scudder, Eastman Johnson, William Bradford, A.T. Bricher, and many more, are also offered.

Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers is especially proud to present an impressive tour of Pop Art and post-war modernism, including works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Gerald Laing, John Wesley, Robert Smithson, William Ronald, R. M. Watts, Marjorie Strider, Marisol Escobar, Allan D’Arcangelo, and many others. The majority of the grouping once belonged to the noted American collectors, John and Kimiko Powers, whose early support of Warhol, Lichtenstein, and others proved crucial in establishing Pop Art as an important post-war aesthetic movement.
