In 2022, the first major retrospective of the artist Alex Katz will take place on the occasion of his 95th birthday. He now lives and works in New York. Under the title Alex Katz - Gathering, the Guggenheim Museum in New York is showing numerous paintings, drawings and graphics by Alex Katz.
The original graphic "Porcelain Beauty Ariel" by Alex Katz is therefore newly published in August. The black and white work continues the series "Porcelain Beauties" which will consist of six works. The graphic is printed on an enamel and aluminum plate. Frank Fluegel Galerie has had Alex Katz in its program since 1999 and has already shown him successfully at Art Cologne in a solo show. The flat, illustrative qualities of these portraits are combined with hard-edged definitions and minimal modeling techniques. The artist's subtractive methodology allows him to remove the visual noise and focus on the essential elements with the utmost precision.
"We are very pleased to present this new work, Porcelain Beauty, for the first time in Germany," says Frank Fluegel, owner of the gallery. "At the age of 95, Katz is at the peak of his career and still creating works of perfect refinement. This is a great opportunity to buy another Alex Katz original."
Alex Katz studied at Cooper Union in New York and spent a summer learning plein air painting at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture before he began exhibiting regularly in New York and other cities around the world. His work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and the Fosun Foundation in Shanghai, among others. His works are in numerous public collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Tate, and fetch prices in the millions on the secondary market.
