 | 'Leonardo-like' portrait triples high estimate

The portrait of a woman made famous because it is not by Leonardo da Vinci sold at Sotheby’s on Thursday for $1.5 million. That price, which included the auction house’s fees, was triple the high estimate of $500,000. “Portrait of a Woman, Called ‘La Belle Ferronnière’ ” has been the subject of scholarly debates and even a nasty public legal drama.Read more | |

 | Christie's confident of a continuing art market recovery

Christie's, which is bringing some powerful inventory under the gavel at its contemporary art sale next month, expects the market to recover this year. With the improvement in conditions, price guarantees may return. In 2009, Christie's states, sales fell to 2.1 billion pounds, a decline of 24%. For the contemporary category, sales dropped 59% to 244.3 million pounds.
