Twenty Grand: Walt Otto advertising illustration
Antique Helper Auctions

September 28, 2012 (Indianapolis, IN)   Highlights from Antique Helper Auction’s October 13 Art and Antiques Auction include a bronze figure by Albin Polasek, created for the Remington Arm’s Company’s centennial celebration; bidders will also find a monumental 1913 Indy 500 presentation frame by Heintz Art Metal, as well as a large oil on canvas advertising illustration by Walt Otto, depicting  1931 Derby horse Twenty Grand.

The most noteworthy offering in this sale will be a bronze figure by Albin Polasek. This impressive bronze was commissioned in 1916, by the village if Ilion, New York to celebrate the Centennial of the Remington Arms Company.  The presale estimate for this piece is est. $20,000-$25,000).

The striking figure represents Remington Arms Company’s founder, Eliphalet Remington II.  48 bronze statues were produced from Polasek’s clay original; one was sent to the Adjutant General of each of the then 48 States from the Village of Ilion, New York,  home of Remington Arms Company.  The donors suggested the statues be awarded annually to the state military organization or militia represented by the winning rifle team in a special match to be known as "The Remington Centennial Trophy Match."

According to Trudy Furno, Researcher at the Polasek Museum in Winter Park, FL, the bronze to be offered on October 13 is one of only five known examples.  Frequently mistaken to represent a Minuteman or American frontiersman Daniel Boone, one such statue has been on display at the Headquarters of the Kentucky National Guard since 1974.  Another is in the Polasek Museum collection.  Another, identified as Daniel Boone, sold at auction in 2001.  Furno became aware of a fourth example, located in Louisiana, in June.  Antique Helper’s October 13 offering brings the grand total to 5. There whereabouts of the remaining 43 examples is unknown.
