Altered Space Gallery's CONDENSE (Group Show) Packs Big Talent into Small Spaces

Released: December 13, 2012

CONDENSE is a look at contemporary artists who construct within restrictive space. These artists layer, compact, weave, & build in explosive detail, in a tense effort to maximize a new plane economy.  Featuring emerging and established artists who work with grandiose abandon on smaller pictorial planes utilizing painting, drawing, assemblage and montage. TYLER FERREIRA is already a master printmaker, while still in his 20s, and uses the antiquated process of lithography to unearth the unconscious mechanics of street art language. DINAH KIRGO is an emmy-award...

ERNEST LAWSON (1873-1939) - Central Park, c.1910

Impressionist Masterpiece Rediscovered

Released: May 16, 2011

After almost a century in a single private collection, Ernest Lawson's "Central Park" has re-emerged.  The painting, executed circa 1910, went from Lawson by way of Mac Beth Galleries directly to a private collection in the midwest. Representing the artist's best signature work, "Central Park" has not been exhibited or widely known until now, four generations later. A member of the often gritty Ashcan School, Lawson visited urban subjects, but through his own lens of Impressionism. "Central Park" is a winter scene inside the Park looking east toward Fifth Avenue at 75th Street.  T...

AFRICAN AMERICANS: Seeing and Seen, 1766 – 1916

Released: February 15, 2010

Babcock Galleries presents "African Americans: Seeing and Seen, 1766 – 1916," an incisive overview of refined and controversial fine art and popular culture images of African Americans as artists and subjects. Bitter brutality and cruel caricature alternate with respectful revelations and positive portrayals of the status of African Americans.  It may be said that all portrayals become betrayals in revealing the motivations and prejudices of their creator, and the images in this exhibition offer telling insights into the prevailing notions of the period.   Each work is not only a sig...
