Few names evoke thoughts of feminine beauty and Hollywood glamour quite like Marilyn Monroe. Arguably one of the most famous Americans in modern history, she captured hearts and imaginations around the world through the memorable characters she portrayed on the silver screen. Now, nearly 50 years later, it is the enduring images in these signed, limited-edition photographs taken by famed photographer, director and author, Lawrence Schiller, that are bringing this larger-than-life figure back in the spotlight. Many of them have never been printed until now. Schiller shot Marilyn in May o...

They also appreciate people's need to rebuild and renew. On Sunday November 18th, Clarke Auction will provide over 400 lots of beauty and structure in...

We have had the privilege to offer some fantastic Indy 500 and auto racing-related treasures over the years. Thanks to the Duesenberg and Clarence Cagle Estates, and the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with retired racer Jigger Sirois, we have all become, in some shape or form, race fans. For many of us, racing has always been a big deal. For others, it’s been the collections and rich history of auto racing that served as the bait. We can unequivocally state that we all love auto racing and all of the interesting and amazing bits and pieces of memorabilia that go with it. ...

Some folks like to do things in a big way. They enjoy the spotlight, and blossom with a little extra attention. We’re sort of that way, too, so we understand. Even when it comes to selling an antique or collectible, we think it’s always more fun to make a splash. Why do anything the conventional way when you can make it fun? Do you remember that Super Hero Auction we had last year? We had national news coverage for that event, plus plenty of local headlines and spots on our local news networks. Our own John discovered he looked good in...

As a more mature artist I've learned that good art does not come from a person who is overworked and spent.Or if it does, its not worth it. I know when I get to a point where I need to get out and have fun.. take a walk, see a concert, be with friends. Life is for living and when I feel full I paint so much better. So, I'm going on my walk now and I'm going to enjoy every scent, sight and sound along the way with my partner Paul who does the same! Here's where we go, up on the hill.A psychiatrist told me once that if people where balanced in how they lived their lives, they wouldn't need d...

I could have pushed myself to work last weekend. I didn't think I could afford to take a trip. But one thing I know is that life is for living. I don't think I will say on my death bed, "I WISH I would have created 20 more paintings". An artist NEEDS to take time to drink in the beauty of life, take time to observe, to breath, taste, smell and feel. That's part of our work! I did that last weekend with my partner Paul who had 4 gigs in the mountains, enough to make it worth his while to go. We were provided a rustic cabin to stay in and there was a fresh snowfall up there. Oh com...

Buying Art is not like buying Detergent; the key is to "buy intelligently". Art buyers often make the wrong decision when comparing two examples of the same Work of Art with the objective of "saving money". Many Buyers fall prey to buying the Work of Art with the lowest price, and often not the best. Daniel Grant wrote a WSJ Article titled Why You Can't Always Trust Art Dealers which casts a negative light on Art Dealers. We don't condone the ethical behavior cited by Mr. Grant and agree due diligence is essential to protect financial h...

Candy may be the art world's answer to the recession blues. Sweet and palatable images abounded at last week's Los Angeles Art Show: Wayne Theibaud's ice cream cones, Jean Wells' giant chocolate Kiss and pink cupcake sculptures, and gummi bears expertly captured in oil by Jeanne Vadeboncouer. Beyond the theme of edible delights, a wide range of art styles, from California impressionists to New York abstract expressionists, Arts and Crafts-era prints to cutting-edge video installations, gave the Fine Art Dealers Association's (FADA) 15th annual show breadth. This year, heavy rains and a st...

Chris Jordan was a lawyer, but don't hold that against him. He reinvented himself as an artist with a social conscious. Seattle-based Jordan creates large-scale photographic works that jolt viewers into thinking about burning issues such as global consumerism and excess. On view at Santa Barbara's Museum of Natural History (through Sept. 11, 2009) is the travelling exhibition "Running the Numbers," his powerful series of work that Jordan describes on his website as a look at "contemporary American culture through the austere lens of statistics." Statistics can be dry, but within a visual co...
