Matthew’s Galleries March 16th art auction resulted in a good-sized crowd, somewhat mixed results, but an overall successful sale. The featured lot was a panoramic circa 1890 view of Portland, Oregon. The 40” x 70” canvas carried an estimate of $8,000-12,000 and fetched just below the high figure of $12,000 (prices include buyer premium). William S. Parrott’s view of Mt. Hood, a 11.5” x 7” oil, fell within estimate at $4,560, yet an 16” x 8” Alaskan oil by Sydney M. Laurence fell below the low guess at $11,400. Young Woman With Flowers by Jean Frans Portaels (Belgian, 1818-1895), is now part of the 19th century European collection at Matthew’s Galleries. While Portaels was known as an Orientalist, this oil suggests a Pre-Raphaelite direction. The 19.75” x 16” canvas is included in the Portaels catalogue raisonné by Antoinette De Laet, (artist’s niece), Brussels, Belgium. It is offered at $110,000.
