Matthew's Galleries announces its summer fine arts auction of 19th & 20th century American and European paintings, watercolors and fine prints.  Highlights include a sanguine drawing by Pierre-Auguste Renior (French, 1841-1919) "Jeune Femme nue aux bras leves", 8 1/4" x 6 3/8", and two street scene paintings by Eugene Galien-Laloue (French, 1854-1941), each 10 7/8" x 13 7/8".  Noted lots from the American paintings selection is "Mt. Rediscoverd CHILDE HASSAM Sold at Auction

Childe Hassam’s “Landscape, Eastern Oregon” almost doubled its high estimate of $14,000-18,000 at Matthew’s Galleries September 21st auction, selling just shy of $34,000 including the buyer’s premium.  The painting was unwittingly rediscovered this past summer, and will be included in the Hassam Catalogue Raisonné by Kathleen Burnside & Stuart Feld.  Measuring 5 1/8” x 8 ¼”, it is typical of Hassam’s Oregon work during his visit in 1908.  Matthew W.   A recently rediscovered Childe Hassam “Landscape, Eastern Oregon” will be included in Matthew’s Galleries' September 21, 2010 Fine & Decorative arts auction. Painted in 1908 on one of the artist’s two trips to the West, the oil on board measures 5 1/8” x 8 ¼”, and is similar in size and character to “Rain Clouds over Oregon Desert” (Childe Hassam Impressionist in the West, Margaret E. Matthew’s Galleries March 16th art auction resulted in a good-sized crowd, somewhat mixed results, but an overall successful sale. The featured lot was a panoramic circa 1890 view of Portland, Oregon. The 40” x 70” canvas carried an estimate of $8,000-12,000 and fetched just below the high figure of $12,000 (prices include buyer premium). William S. Parrott’s view of Mt. Hood, a 11.5” x 7” oil, fell within estimate at $4,560, yet an 16” x 8” Alaskan oil by Sydney M. Laurence fell below the low guess at $11,400.
