Metropolitan Museum and the Whitney Announce Collaborative Agreement for Breuer Building

The directors of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art announced today that their boards of trustees have agreed in principle to a multiple-year collaboration projected to begin in 2015, when the Whitney opens its new museum facility on Gansevoort Street in downtown Manhattan. Ancient Roman Mosaic from Israel on View at Metropolitan Museum

In 1996, workmen widening the Jerusalem–Tel Aviv road in Lod (formerly Lydda), Israel, made a startling discovery: signs of a Roman mosaic pavement were found about three feet below the modern ground surface. A rescue excavation was conducted immediately by the Israel Antiquities Authority, revealing a mosaic floor that measures approximately 50 feet long by 27 feet wide. It is of exceptional quality and in an excellent state of preservation. Romare Bearden's vibrant mural-size tableau The Block (1971) and related sketches and photographs will be featured at The Metropolitan Museum of Art beginning January 15, 2010, in a small installation of works from the collection.
