Wyeth, O'Keeffe lead American art auctions in New York

Andrew Wyeth's "Off Shore" was the top lot at Christie's American art sale.

A silent scene of a clam-digging expedition off the foggy Maine coast rose to $6.35 million (with buyer's premium) at Christie's Thursday. "Off Shore" by Andrew Wyeth, painted in 1967, had a pre-sale estimate of $1.2-$1.8 million.

From the collection of actor Mel Gibson and his wife Robyn, Maxfield Parrish’s "Daybreak” sold for $5.2 million, against a pre-sale low estimate of $4 million.

Sotheby’s American art auction totaled $31.9 million, led by a 1926 black-and-white Georgia O’Keeffe floral that fetched $4.1 million.
