Benjamin Genocchio Removed as Armory Show Director Amid Sex Harassment Allegations

9 November 2017

Influential art world figure and former Artnet editor Benjamin Genocchio has been ousted as executive director of the Armory Show in New York City after the New York Times reported multiple sexual harassment allegations against him

Prior to heading the Armory Show, which is one of the world's top art fairs, Genocchio was Editor-in-Chief at Artnet news and he worked before that at Louise Blouin Media and the New York Times. Deputy Director Nicole Berry will take his place at the Armory Show.

The Times reported that five women have come forward about Genocchio groping them, eight allege verbal abuse, and eleven claim to have heard about or witnessed his harassing behaviour in the workplace, ranging from inappropriate remarks to unwelcome touching.

The news comes on the heels of similar allegations against Artforum publisher Knight Landesman and movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, among others.

An art world initiative called Not Surprised --- that collected signatures from those opposing sexual harassment in the workplace --- had to shut down its signature page last week after it was overwhelmed by a deluge of responses, perhaps indicating that others could speak up.
