American Art Week in New York: Events from Nov. 28 to Dec. 4, 2010

The week following Thanksgiving, American art takes center stage in Manhattan with a flurry of important auctions, gallery exhibitions, museum shows, and a gem of a fair.

Mostly created before 1960, the works on exhibit and for sale range from a magnificent painting of George Washington by colonial portraitist Gilbert Stuart (Hammer Galleries) to stunning early modernist works by Joseph Stella, Oscar Bluemner, Everett Shinn, and more.

At auction are fine examples by American masters such as Sargent, Benson, Hassam, O'Keeffe, and Burchfield. Among the highlights, Sotheby's is featuring a bright Edmund Tarbell beach scene with a low estimate of $2,000,000, more than double the artist's auction record.

Dec. 1, 4-8pm, Just Off Madison: Winter Gallery Walk at private dealers located along East 69th through 79th Streets between Fifth and Park Avenues, including Avery Galleries, Betty Krulik Fine Art, Conner-Rosenkranz, Debra Force Fine Art, Franklin Riehlman Fine Art, Hawthorne Fine Art, Jonathan Boos, Kraushaar Galleries, Lois Wagner Fine Arts, James Reinish & Associates, Menconi & Schoelkopf Fine Art, and Meredith Ward Fine Art.

Auctions at Bonhams (Nov. 30), Christie's (Dec. 1), and Sotheby's (Dec. 2).

Gallery exhibitions include Sargent and Impression at Adelson Galleries; John Zinsser; Recent Paintings at James Graham & Sons; and Masterpieces of American Painting at Catherine Dail Fine Art which features works by top-tier American artists such as Romare Bearden, Oscar Berninghaus, Jasper Francis Cropsey, William Glackens, Marsden Hartley, Martin Johnson Heade, David Johnson, Ernest Lawson, Luigi Lucioni, Edward Potthast, Severin Roesen and Andy Warhol.
