American Art Week in New York: Events from Nov. 28 to Dec. 4, 2010The week following Thanksgiving, American art takes center stage in Manhattan with a flurry of important auctions, gallery exhibitions, museum shows, and a gem of a fair. Mostly created before 1960, the works on exhibit and for sale range from a magnificent painting of George Washington by colonial portraitist Gilbert Stuart (Hammer Galleries) to stunning early modernist works by Joseph Stella, Oscar Bluemner, Everett Shinn, and more. At auction are fine examples by American masters such as Sargent, Benson, Hassam, O'Keeffe, and Burchfield. Among the highlights, Sotheby's is featuring a bright Edmund Tarbell beach scene with a low estimate of $2,000,000, more than double the artist's auction record.
