Americana Weekend: 5 Patriotic Art Exhibitions

Across the U.S. this July 4th weekend, museums and special exhibits offer the opportunity to revel in art and antiques that celebrate the spirit of America.

This work is part of the exhibition "Winslow Homer: The Pleasures of Summer," through July 25, at Woodhouse Gallery, Guild Hall in Easthampton, NY. American flag expert Jeff R. Bridgman is showcasing a selection of his historic flags, political banners and patriotic objects, at the Aspen Antiques & Fine Art Fair, July 3-10, at the Ice Garden in downtown Aspen, Colorado.  Heritage Museum in Sandwich, Mass. presents "The Art of Frank Vining Smith," a survey of the artist's marine paintings, through Oct.  31.  Smith is relevant for his detailed documentation of American ships, such as the extreme clipper Flying Cloud. American textiles expert Laura Fisher, of New York's Fisher Heritage gallery, is showing a selection of antique quilts and hooked rugs, both true American crafts, at John Sideli Gallery, Wiscasset, Maine, through July 17. The work of the nation's great illustrator of 20th-century American life is surveyed in "Telling Stories: Norman Rockwell from the Collections of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg" at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC, opening July 2.
