80-year-old Amateur Artist Botches Restoration of Church Painting

A century-old church fresco depicting Christ was overpainted by an elderly parishioner in a failed attempt to restore the work.

Cecilia Gimenez had good intentions to fix the peeling painting by Elias Garcia Martinez in Santuario del Misericordia, a Catholic church in Borja, Spain. She took it upon herself to touch up the fresco using an old photograph as a guide.

The unfortunate outcome has left the painting badly defaced and art experts are now examining it for a professional restoration.
