A historic cowboy painting worth in the six-figures, recently found in a town building in Bridgewater, Mass., is under restoration while library trustees decide whether to sell or display the pricey artwork.
Vose Galleries of Boston is overseeing the restoration of celebrated Western artist Frank Tenney Johnson's "Trooper on Guard" for the town. The gallery has said the work might bring as much as $375,000 at auction, according to Library Director Sean Daley.
The 1935 painting was given to the library by a donor in 1967. It hung in plain sight for years in the town manager's office until a visitor asked whether it was an original work.
Security issues at the library will be considered by trustees before the deciding the fate of the painting.
