"Duets: Themes and Variations, New Paintings by Warren Prosperi" at Vose Galleries

"Bringing a portrait painter’s depth of psychological realism to the table, the Prosperis make history paintings that are distinctly contemporary," writes Cate McQuaid in the Boston Globe of the exhibition “Duets: Themes and Variations: New Paintings by Warren Prosperi,’’ at Boston's Vose Galleries through July 16.

“The First Casualty of Bunker Hill,’’ a monumental 7-by-10-foot painting by Warren Prosperi, who was aided by his wife, Lucia, is a well-researched, minutely-detailed history painting depicting the start of the American Revolution. It is the first in a series of four that the artists hope a buyer will buy and donate to a Boston institution.

“Coming out of modernism, history painting was the lowest of the low. It hadn’t been practiced for a long time,’’ Warren says in the Boston Globe. “We thought, Why not revive history painting, and be journalistic and factual about it?"

The mural is featured with several paired paintings (duets) with diverse themes such as fly-fishing, New England landscapes, a string quartet practising, and a young woman experiencing a museum.

Well-attended American Art Fair Shines in New Venue

The fourth incarnation of The American Art Fair triumphed at a dazzling new venue from Nov. 28 to Dec. 1, 2011. First Retrospective of Early African American Artist Julien Hudson at Worcester Art Museum

A groundbreaking exhibition opened Dec. 9 at the Worcester Art Museum entitled “In Search of Julien Hudson: Free Artist of Color in Pre-Civil War New Orleans.” Julien Hudson (1811-1844) is the second-earliest documented portrait painter of African descent to work in the United States. Little-known today, Hudson died an untimely, somewhat mysterious death, and only fragments of his oeuvre survive to tell his story.
