John James Audubon's Louisiana Heron
New Orleans-based Neal Auction Co.’s Sept. 11-12 auction tallied over $2.2 million including 18 world record auction prices. American buyers were focused on a group of 64 John James Audubon (1785- 1851) prints from the Havell edition of "The Birds of America."
Among the star lots was Audubon's Louisiana Heron (estimate: $80,000 - 120,000) which garnered a new record price at auction of $137,425. The previous auction record for this print was $89,625 in 2004.
The strong prices realized for single Audubon illustrations may bode well for the Dec. 7 Sotheby's sale which includes a rare first edition of Audubon’s (1785- 1851) “Birds of America.” Recognized as a masterpiece of American art, the four volumes with 435 hand-colored illustrations may reel in a record 6 million pounds ($9.2 million).
