An untitled painting by Arthur R. Herrick Sr.

New England impressionists Aldro T. Hibbard and Anthony Thieme were his teachers and his friends. Like his contemporaries, Gloucester, Rockport, and scenic points along the North Shore of Massachusetts as well as New Hampshire's snow-covered mountains figured large in his oeuvre.

An estimated 370 works by Arthur R. Herrick Sr. (1897-1970) are owned across the U.S. His granddaughter says she has another 300 of his paintings and is ready to sell.

Lesser known than Hibbard or Thieme are today, Herrick enjoyed a bit more notoriety during his lifetime, but never achieved the critical acclaim of his teachers. He studied at The New School of Design in Boston (now the Vesper George School) and worked as a freelance illustrator and package designer (Ritz Crackers, King Arthur Flour). Eventually he exhibited his paintings at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford and Vose Galleries in Boston.

Herrick's granddaughter, Anne, is now charged with the task of dispering his estate, collected in the family's Westmoreland, New Hampshire, home and attached gallery. She opened her late parents' Meadow Brook Gallery over the weekend to offer the paintings for between $50 and $750.

According to Askart.com, eleven of Herrick's works recorded at auctions are led by a top price of $462 for a Rockport street scene.
