This curated show is designed to illustrate the progression of American art from the Hudson River School to Modernism. Exemplary paintings from each style category will be hung chronologically to provide side-by-side comparisons of the advancements made by American artists and to highlight those who ventured beyond their generational norm. Examples to be exhibited include works by Hudson River School progenitors Thomas Doughty, Asher B. Durand, and Sanford Robinson Gifford; visionaries Ralph A. Blakelock, George Inness, and Winslow
Homer; Impressionists Willard Metcalf and William Merritt Chase; and celebrated Modernists including Robert Henri, Thomas Hart Benton, Rockwell Kent, and Milton Avery. This show opens with the American Art Fair Springtime Gallery Walk, Wednesday, May 19, 2010, 2-8 PM.
