The American Federation of Arts (AFA) is pleased to announce that artist Richard Phillips will be giving the second ArtTalk of 2011, to be held at Christie’s on Wednesday, March 9, at 6:30 p.m. ArtTalks, the AFA’s lecture series, features notable figures in the art world. Following Phillips’s lecture, audience members are invited to participate in a question-and-answer session and wine reception. In-kind support for ArtTalks is provided by Christie’s. About Richard Phillips: “Ironic, critical and conflicting, Richard Phillips lulls us into a false sense of security, before pouncing with some rather challenging subjects.” —Wallpaper (2009) Richard Phillips has a striking signature style that derives from his distinctive use of popular images—often from advertising, fashion spreads, and erotic media—that he translates into drawings and then luscious, oversized realist paintings executed through a traditional process. With fashion, media, and film collaborations, Phillips’s imagery has achieved a level of pop recognition outside of the art world. Phillips has exhibited extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe, with solo shows at Gagosian Gallery, New York; White Cube, London; Max Hetzler in Berlin; Kunsthalle Zürich; Le Consortium in Dijon; and Kunstverein Hamburg. Adolf Dietrich, Richard Phillips / Painting and Misappropriation will be at the Kunstmuseum des Kantons Thurgau in Ittingen, Switzerland, in May 2011; and Most Wanted, a solo show featuring paintings of celebrities over luxury-label backdrops, will open on January 27 at White Cube Gallery in London. Phillips lives and works in New York. Tickets: $15; $10 for AFA members and students with valid ID. Seating is limited and reservations are required. For reservations, please call 212.988.7700 ext. 210 or e-mail arttalks@afaweb.org. Tickets can also be purchased online at http://www.nycharities.org/events/EventLevels.aspx?ETID=3115 (Image: Richard Phillips, Most Wanted (Robert Pattinson), 2010. Oil on linen, 95 x 78 inches.
