Just three weeks after a highly successful start to the fall auction season, the Clarke Auction team of appraisers has collectively created another quality sale of fine art, midcentury, silver, jewelry, antiques, and Asian items to be held on Sunday, September 8th at 12pm EST.

The fine art selection will begin the sale and will include a number of important estate fresh pieces. One of the most exciting pieces in the fine art selection is a Roy D. Deforest  polymer on canvas entitled “Swamp Fever.” The work is signed and dated 1982 with a Phoenix Art Museum label verso.  The painting is a sprawling exhibition of color, measuring almost 72” high and 85.5” wide.

Also featured in the fine art selection are several works by Sam Messer, including a large 1987 abstract oil on canvas,  and a 1995-1998 oil on canvas entitled “Portrait without Sedg” or alternatively “Pink Toe.” Also by Messer, a charcoal and dry pigment on ray paper, and a color lithograph will be featured in the selection on September 29th.

Additional modernist paintings will be featured through works by the Dominican painter, Ramon Oviedo. The two paintings, one abstract figural piece, and one of a musician, are stellar examples of abstraction to portray the human form. Both of the Oviedo lots convey a modern, yet timeless, view into the soul of the captured scene. Each painting is a representation of modernism not only from a single artist, but an area of the world that breathes color and supposes life on canvas. Oviedo’s works should bring a considerable amount of interest and will be two exciting lots at Clarke’s September 29th sale.

Straying outside the realm of traditional mediums, a special offering by Antonio M. Blanco will be included in the selection. Blanco’s three separate pieces include highly unique and original carved and painted frames with original poetry collage interiors. They are entitled “Flora,” “This and That,” and “The Finger of Columbus” respectively.

Fine art and print selections also include important Old Master works including a finely executed still life by Willem Kalf, two Peruvian school paintings, and an exquisite Venice scene in the manner of Guardi. Other notable artists in the catalog for September 29th include Charles Levier, Paolo Vallorz, Louis Jambour, Frank-Will, J.P Metcalf, David Kucera, Bill Bomar, Gail Butt, L. Gideon, Leo Quanchi, Lanskoy, Vilmos Aba-Novak, Ivo Hauptmann, Joseph Glasco, Alois Kirnig, Paul Landacre and more.

Midcentury offerings are also in abundance for the September 29th sale. A stunning pair of blue leather Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller 670 lounge chairs together with a single 671 ottoman will be featured in the midcentury selection.  The chairs are early 1960s examples with a circular Herman Miller label, upgraded bright blue leather cushions with half down fill, and paper labels on the underside of each.

Also for Herman Miller, several pieces designed by George Nelson will be offered.  A George Nelson thin edge chest is the featured lot and maintains excellent condition with full clear labels and aluminum pulls. A matched pair of George Nelson chests and a pair of George Nelson bookcases will also be auction on September 29th at Clarke. The book cases will be sold as a lot with a beautiful dark and cushioned convertible headboard.

Another recently coveted designer featured in the September 29th sale is Paul McCobb.  Clarke Auction will feature several lots of Paul McCobb designed furniture manufactured by Planner Group including a bedroom set, a slide front server together with a slide front cabinet, a low chest, a quality blondewood teacart, and more.

More classic examples of midcentury to be offered September 29th include a magnificent signed Phillip Lloyd Powell free form hanging shelf,  a set of 4 Eero Saarinen tulip armchairs with BR-50 swivel bases, a Milo Baughman two seat sofa with squared chrome frame, a Milo Baughman chrome and rosewood bedroom set, a George Mulhauser for Plycraft tufted leather and wing arm lounge chair, and a magnificent black, gray, and white shade Trianelle Floor Lamp singed Arredoluce. There will also be plentiful lots of midcentury lighting, design, furniture, and decoration currently available for view in the catalog online or in house two days before the sale.

Antique and modern decorative art selections include a midcentury singed C. Jere bronze toredore sculpture, a Le Coultre clock, a figural bronze of a knight, a Hans Panzer signed figural bronze, a signed bronze entitled “Margurite”  by Eugene Aizlein,  bronze candelabra, a perfumer, bronze mounted urns, clocks and more. There are also several decorative porcelain and marble lots including a magnificent marble planter, a marble bust, a marble sculpture of Ariadne and the panther,  porcelain figures, porcelain vases, serving sets and many others.

Outside of home and garden decoration, personal decoration will also be featured by Clarke on September 29th. The jewelry selections include Georg Jensen with a beautifully polished simplistic bracelet, antique and vintage gold rings, diamond rings, platinum and sterling silver. Sterling silver lots also include Wm. B. Durgin Co., Tiffany & Co., Reed & Barton, a magnificent Faberge silver cigarette case, and many lots of hollowware, vanity pieces, serving pieces, flatware sets, inkwells and more.

Besides Continental and American furniture and art, the Asian selection remains high in quality and appeal. Clarke will feature many important Chinese lots in the late September sale including several lots of Rose Mandarin, Rose Medallion, Blue and White garden seats, urns, dishes and more. Also in the Chinese selection several lots of porcelain vases, lamps, figures, and urns will be offered. Chinese furniture selections will include an exquisite and large carved hardwood bench, a hardwood étagère, multiple lots of carved seating, Chinese bronze tray lots with figures and censors, scrolls, enameled lamps, hardstone snuff bottles and figures, bronze hand mirrors, and many other important Asian and Chinese items.

In house previews will be on Friday, September 27th and Saturday, September 28th from 12pm to 6pm EST and will continue on Sunday, September 29th (day of sale) from 10am to 12pm EST (start of sale.)

Online catalog is available for view 24/7 and is updated daily.
