Altered Space Gallery is a multi-use gallery that encourages the cross-pollination of fine art, design, and creative object making. Centered in the burgeoning scene of Venice Beach’s Abbot Kinney Blvd., its presence is established with a continuous recognition of LA’s hybridized cultural production. Today’s creative object makers pull from a vast array of influences, and the most interesting objects in today’s landscape do not function in naive exclusivity, nor subscribe to antiquated beliefs of “high” and “low”. Their process is lateralized and interdisciplinary, and these facets range from those most overlapping to the outer fringe. Altered Space Gallery highlights those artists which successfully merge the idea of “art, design & object”.
As “Street Art” and “Pop-Surrealism” become cemented in regurgitory clichés, many artists seek to push beyond pop culture’s law of self-referentiality, and into surprising areas of excited abstraction, deepened classicism, and sometimes a smearing of both. POP FRINGE is a look at how young artists today work along these unraveling fringe boundaries.
MEEX ONE pushes the signifiers of graffiti’s mark-making vocabulary to a state of heightened ambience, while maintaining a sense of critical urgency. His paintings lie in the intersection of beauty and vandalism.
MICHELE MIKESELL seeks fantastical possibilities to real-world oddities. Her paintings tell their own other-worldly history: avant-classicism from a parallel universe.
TYLER FERREIRA pulls from the fragmented unconscious of street art’s recent “coming of age”. His large scale drawings and stone-block prints illustrate narratives about narratives.
