Roland Auctions NY Delivers Sublime Luxury Antiques and Fun Vintage Toys On Saturday, December 10
New York
, New York -- 25 November 2011
With vintage American toys and games sharing space with a collection of Rembrandt Van Rijn etchings, 18th Century furniture and Weiner Werkstatte items, Roland Auctions NY is beginning to look like a luxury gallery set up for holiday shopping on December 10. According to Roland Auctions specialist Michael Podniesinski, the marquee item in the December 10th auction is an 1887 French canal scene by Le Bourg. Entitled "Bords de Seine," the large painting depicts a canal barge at a mountainside town slip that is surely the gateway to commerce for the surrounding countryside. The painting has craquelure appropriate to its age and has not been relined. Housed in a period Rococo gilt frame ("water gilded," Podniesinski explains, accounting for the brilliance of the highlights) the oil-on-canvas bears tags from both Christies and Wildenstein Gallery. Meanwhile, a collection of Rembrandt etchings on 19th Century laid folio sized paper, each with crisp lines and wide margins, are certain to command strong interest. Of age appropriate condition, state unknown, the collection includes "Old Man in Divided Fur Hat," "Old Woman Sleeping," "Self-Portrait," "The Little Jewish Bride," and a nude entitled "La Négresse Couche." The titles are stamped in French in the lower right by the French Publisher. Other outstanding fine art includes a Paul Signac mixed media, gouache and pencil on paper, of a stand of trees by water. When held to the light, the earlier pencil sketch for the painting can be seen. Among the 20th Century art are a Jacques Lipchitz mixed-media study for "Prometheus" and a Walt Kuhn water color of a woman reading. A collection of 18th Century furniture evokes the grandeur of earlier times. A Dutch marquetry demi-lune console with two drawers (one with a hidden fulcrum release) opens to an elliptical games table. The marquetry features a center medallion of a neoclassical urn with opposing C-scrolling and owls. A gadrooned lip is inlaid with a bouquet. Floral motif inlay continues down the legs that end in delicate feet. Among the smaller furnishings is an 18th Century Hispano-Moresque table-top vanity. Incised in an elaborate floral motif, the vanity contains one drawer with fitted interior and is surmounted by a tilt mirror. From the 19th Century comes an Italian painted chest that was, quite likely, intended as a wedding piece, given the generational female portraits on each of the three drawers. Bifurcated scrolling tendrils in vibrant hues connect the portraits. The overall appearance is shades of blue and crème. Twentieth Century modern collectors will find the best that Mid-Century has to offer. There is a circular mahogany table by Paul McCobb for H. Sacks & Sons. The triumph of style features solid brass banding and stretchers. The Weiner Werkstatte is represented by Josef Hoffman, Lotte Calm and Susi Singer. Danish Modern furniture includes an Arne Vodder desk of mixed wood with a front cabinet. The legs splay inward, complimenting the all around organic styling. And a pair of Hans Wegner's "The Chair," will make the perfect home addition. Light fixtures include a hand blown glass piece designed by Gio Ponti for Venini. The floor lamp is of multi-colored glass. Collectors will also appreciate the Edgar Grant lamp with Daum crystal shade. A collection of Holly Hunt and Dakota Jackson furniture, including club chairs, ottoman and oval black lacquer side table, will be sold without reserve. Mid-Century decorative arts come together in a strong showing of disciplines. This includes a large collection of 1930s Hagenauer figures of metal and glass as well as a metal bowl by French artist Claudius Linossier. Studio-art from the atelier of Line Vautrin includes a spin of silver and enamel and a resin box. A Jean Despres teapot should not be missed. Baby Boomers will be well attuned to vintage toys from the 1940s to 1960s. A collection of mascots and figures includes a Batman moulded plastic figure, 1966, a Walt Disney marionette of Dopey in its original box and an early cartoon moue of early molded thermal plastic. Boxed toy highlights are a set of American bricks, the wooden precursors of Legos, a Walkie Talkie, a Western Rangers Holster Set and Lincoln Logs. Finally, a larger than life cardboard cutout of Bozo the clown, signed by Bozo himself, AKA Larry Harmon, will leave the building.
