Chorley’s announces Modern and Contemporary Sale of over 700 lots including Lynn Chadwick sculpture

Cotswolds auction house Chorley’s have announced their first 2018 sale of Modern and Contemporary Art and Design, taking place on Tuesday 15 May 2018.

With two important collections of studio pottery this sale cements Chorley’s position as a leading regional auctioneer of important Modern Design.

Among the most important lots are studio pottery from renowned Modernist Potter Dame Lucie Rie (1902-1995). Rie’s pieces include a stunning porcelain vase, of tall cylindrical form with flared rim, in a manganese and blue glaze with scraffito detailing, estimated at £15000 – 20000 and a porcelain footed bowl with yellow glaze and bronzed manganese drip rim, impressed with artist's seal, expected to reach between £20000 – 30000.

Of particular note is a sculpture from leading British sculptor Lynn Chadwick, known for his innovative bronze and steel sculptures of abstracted and expressive figures.The Maquette V Walking Woman/bronze, circa 1984 is priced between £10000 – 15000.

Also on sale are pieces from John Ward, regarded as one of Britain’s greatest potters.These include stoneware tailed bowl, in a matt black and white glaze from1995 estimated at £3000 - 5000 and a stoneware vessel, decorated radiating concentric circles in green to a matt white glazed ground, impressed mark to base from 1989, expecting to fetch £5000 – 7000.

The sale includes over 700 lots, divided into the following categories: Carpets and Rugs, Foreign White Metal & Plate, Silver,Watches, Coins & Objects deVertu, Jewellery, Modern Jewellery & Silver, Modern Oil Paintings, Watercolours & Drawings, Modern Prints, Studio Pottery & Art Glass and Modern Furniture & Design.

Chorley’s is an international auction house, located in the Cotswolds, just a few miles from Cheltenham, and close to both Gloucester and Stroud. It has two large salerooms within the monastery grounds of the historic Prinknash Abbey.

The auction will commence at 10am. A viewing will take place Sunday 13th 10am-4pm and Monday 14th 9am-5pm.
