NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Katja Yoon in Life is But a Dream. The exhibition opens May 22, 2018 and runs through June 12, 2018 with an opening reception on Thursday, May 24 from 6-8 pm. Any art lover who enjoys thought-provoking artworks and meeting talented and interesting artists is encouraged to attend.
About the Artist
Katja Yoon uses oil and acrylic paint on canvas to capture the moods and atmospheres of her surrounds. Her expressive works lay bare the connections between impulsivity and consciousness, the bold colors and dramatic lines in her paintings highlighting the interplay of dueling energies. The artist often layers subtle shades of white to create soft, harmonious backgrounds and then paints blocks of powerful foreground shades, ultimately finding the precarious balance between vitality and harmony.
Yoon draws from her Scandinavian and South Korean heritage to create works that are restrained in composition and streamlined in palette. Blue Sea and Iceland each feature centralized compositions with jolts of line and color hovering like a gash in the middle of the canvas. In works titled Erotica and Pleasure, Yoon creates organic surfaces in which the layering of color and line becomes almost anthropomorphic, the canvases resembling undulating human forms. Finally, Winter is a sparse abstraction hinting at a grey, snow covered landscape. The monochrome layers of color have a transportive quality that is simultaneously energetic and peaceful.

About the Exhibition
Life is But a Dream is a group show that explores the surreality of memory and identity in a world too often constructed to resemble a mere product on the shelf of popular culture. Comprising 17 artists, the primary link joining them together is how memory can be reshaped by the imagination. These artists all share in examining the content of what they remember, with social and familial life acting as a lens through which they reexamine recollected moments.
