New York:Bibliophiles will find a treasure trove at The Park Avenue Armory when over 200 international dealers from 11 countries exhibit in The New York Antiquarian Book Fair, called by CBS TV’s “60 Minutes “the best book fair in the world.” All exhibitors are members of the prestigious Antiquarian Book Dealers Association of America or The International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. On display will be books, maps and ephemera to suit every taste. This year’s iteration will feature an enormous range of material. Starting as early as the 15th century, and running through the 21st century, collectors will find works from Europe, Asia, The Americas and Africa. Genres will include modern first editions, mysteries and thrillers, scientific works, maps, manuscripts and prints from Latin to German to French, Old and Modern English, children’s books and many more.
On Saturday, April 13 there will be a panel discussion “Book Collecting101,” free with admission. Seating is limited so call for reservation. On Discovery Day, Sunday April 14, attendees (with admission) can take advantage of the enormous knowledge of the fair’s exhibitors by bringing their books, maps and ephemera to the fair to discuss with the dealers. Visitors can consult experts on the age and approximate value of their items. (No formal appraisals will be given and the limit is three items per visitor.) In past years part of a Shakespeare folio have been discovered as well as original photographs of Louis Comfort Tiffany’s designs for stained glass.
