New York, NY. – The sixth annual spring Tribal Art Fair -  Madison Ancient and Tribal Art (MATA), opens at the Arader Gallery on Manhattan’s upper east side on May 12th, 2017 and will run through May 14th, 2017. The opening reception will be held on the evening of May 12th from 5pm - 8pm. This group of renowned international dealers specializing in the art of traditional cultures, will present an exhibition of select works of the highest quality. Works range from exceptional museum quality antique figurative and abstract sculpture, to ancient artifacts from the rich tribal cultures of Africa, Oceania, Indonesia, Asia, and the Americas. The spring 2017 MATA fair, a component of Tribal Art Week, will coincide with the much anticipated Sotheby’s and Christie’s sale of African and Oceanic art.

MATA invites collectors of modern and contemporary art and design to consider the beauty of non-Western sculpture both on its own terms and for its potential to compliment their collections.

Show highlights will include, from James Stephenson African Art, a large Kongo Fetish Figure from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This excellent figure is from the prominent Jean Willy Mestach collection in Brussels. James Stephenson’s selection will also include an array of other extraordinary objects including a fabulous Dan Guere Mask from the Cote d’Ivoire, originally from the Helen Kamer collection and published in the prestigious Guere-Wobe-Bete by Kamer. From Marc Assayag, an exquisite Massim Figure dating to the 19th century, published in Mutuaga, a Nineteenth Century New Guinea Master Carver (Berran, H., 1996).
