Nineteenth century views of Northwest American cities are scarce, and sought after by collectors and museums alike. Matthew’s Galleries is pleased to offer an important view of the East side of Portland, Oregon painted about 1890 by Charles Christian Eisele (1854-1919). On the auction block with a conservative estimate of $8,000-12,000, the oil on canvas is grand in size as the Oregon landscape it depicts: 40” x 70”. The view is from Mt. Tabor with considerable foreground view of figures, houses, trains, trolleys and farms. In the distance is Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier and Rocky Butte midway. More than 100 additional lots of 19th & 20th American and European paintings include “An Alaskan Autumn Evening” by Sydney Laurence (1865-1940) estimated at $14,000-18,000 and a view of Mt. Hood, Oregon by William S. Parrott (1844-1915) with a guess of $4,000-6,000 in addition to other Northwest paintings of the period. Seven plein-air California landscapes by Marie B. Kendall deserve attention as well, carrying estimates low as $500-700 and high as $2,500-3,500. Modernist works include a collage/casein by Paul Horiuchi with a guesstimate of $1,500-2,000; an oil by Robert Colescott “Seated Woman” estimated at $3,000-5,000; two paintings by Jefferson Tester, and more. For the European collector, a charming oil of children by William Hemsley titled “The Bird Trap” is offered with an estimate of $1,500-2,500; a Barbizon landscape by Louis A. Bouche will be hard to resist with a guess of $600-900; and a pastoral by Walter J. Watson is on the block with a guess of $2,500-3,500 and there is more. A few fine prints and some sculpture will also be offered at this Tuesday, March 16th auction.
