First constructed during the reign of Augustus, the Pantheon was restored and draws both its aesthetic and historical importance from the magnificent and unique dome added by Hadrian in the 2nd century A.D.  The rare marble portrait of the famous philhellenic emperor, Hadrian belonged to an impressive, larger-than-life sculpture and shows the emperor as commander in chief and Pater Patriae (Father of the Country).
